CABE’s success in building regional alliances and fostering collaboration across African nations laid the groundwork for a larger, more comprehensive organization that could tackle issues on a global scale.
Who We Are
Background History of The Blue Economy World Organization (BEWO).
The Blue Economy World Organization (BEWO) traces its origins to the Chamber of African Blue Economy (CABE), an organization that united African stakeholders to explore the potential of ocean resources for sustainable development. With Africa’s vast coastline and abundant marine resources, CABE played a pivotal role in fostering regional collaboration, advancing policy advocacy, and promoting sustainable practices within the Blue Economy sector. As CABE’s success grew, the need for a more inclusive global platform became evident. Recognizing the interconnectedness of global ocean economies, CABE proposed the formation of BEWO to unite countries, corporations, research institutions, NGOs, and coastal communities worldwide under a common vision for sustainable marine development.
Key Milestones Leading To Blue Economy World Establishment
Recognition of Global Alliance Opportunities
Through its work, CABE recognized the potential for a global alliance, where countries and institutions beyond Africa could contribute to, and benefit from, Blue Economy initiatives. This realization was fueled by interactions with global leaders, who saw similar challenges and opportunities in their regions’ Blue Economy sectors.
Formal Proposal and Support for Blue Economy World Organization (BEWO)
CABE’s executive board drafted a formal proposal for BEWO, with support from international partners in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and North America. This proposal received positive feedback, with stakeholders recognizing BEWO’s potential to drive global action, pool resources, and standardize best practices for ocean sustainability.
Global Summit and Founding Declaration
In collaboration with its international partners, CABE hosted a Global Blue Economy Summit, where stakeholders officially declared their commitment to establishing BEWO. This summit served as the founding moment for BEWO, setting forth its mission, objectives, and initial strategic goals.
Establishment of BEWO Headquarters and Governance
After its founding declaration, BEWO established a central headquarters and began appointing its Board of Governors, Executive Committee, and founding members. These positions were filled by representatives from CABE and international leaders from academia, government, industry, and environmental NGOs, ensuring a broad and inclusive governance structure.
Mission
BEWO aims to unify global Blue Economy efforts by fostering sustainable development, innovation, knowledge exchange, and advocating for equitable ocean policies.
Vision
A future where ocean economies are balanced with conservation, and coastal communities thrive from equitable access to Blue Economy opportunities.
